Utricularia graminifolia - ADA
Utricularia graminifolia, commonly known as UG, is a captivating aquatic plant renowned for its unique carnivorous nature and its ability to form a beautiful, ush green carpet in aquariums.
This fascinating plant belongs to the bladderwort family, Lentibulariaceae, and is native to Asia, particularly Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, and Myanmar. It thrives in shallow, slow-moving streams and wetlands, often attaching itself to rocks or submerged wood.
UG is a small, delicate plant with thin, grass-like leaves that grow in dense clusters. It is a rootless plant, relying on its stolons (horizontal stems) to spread and anchor itself.
The most remarkable feature of UG is its carnivorous nature. It possesses numerous tiny bladder-like traps on its stolons and leaves. These traps are triggered by minute aquatic invertebrates, which are then captured and digested by the plant. This adaptation allows UG to thrive in nutrient-poor environments.
