Midnight Medaka (or Black Midnight Medaka) is a striking, ornamental variety of the Japanese Ricefish (Oryzias latipes) prized for its deep black coloration. Highly popular among aquarists and pond enthusiasts, these fish are celebrated for their hardiness, ease of care, and elegant appearance
Appearance: Most "Midnight" strains feature a sleek, matte black body. The premium Midnight Frill variant is further distinguished by long, frilled fins and a luminous "external light" (sparkle) along its back that resembles stars against a night sky.
  • Behavior: They are peaceful, energetic schoolers that thrive in both indoor aquariums (10+ gallons) and outdoor ponds.
  • Hardiness: These fish are exceptionally resilient, capable of surviving a wide temperature range, often hibernating outdoors in ponds at least 40 cm deep.
  • Midnight Rituals: Recent 2025 research has revealed that wild Medaka exhibit significant courtship and spawning activity late at night, typically peaking between 2:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m
