LOW LIGHT (SHADE) TOLERANT PLANTS
Keep in mind that the list of these low light/shade tolerant plants doesn't mean they "thrive" in low light or dark spaces. It just means they can get by with areas that are shadier and less exposed to natural light. Most plants will appreciate and do better in bright indirect light. Some can grow well in indoor fluorescent lighting (10hr plus to make up for light intensity).
A favorite of designers and office spaces for their easy care, low maintenance, and adaptability to lower light/ indoor settings. Water sparingly, office fluorescent is adequate, and clean leaves often. Avoid varieties that have a lot of variegation or red as those will require brighter indirect exposure to really bring out the colors. Green varieties are great for indoors/ shade areas.
CALATHEAS
Most CALATHEA do not like bright exposure or direct sun as their leaves will burn or bleach out. Great for shady indirect spaces or diffused lighting. Indoor fluorescent lighting is adequate. Will require a more humid environment.
FERNS
Most FERNS do well in dappled shade, some morning sun, indoor fluorescent lighting. Great for bathrooms will windows and will appreciate moderate humidity to keep leaves from browning.
Most Dracaena are adaptable but this variety with dark green leaves and slow growth is ideal for shady areas of your urban jungle and only water when almost dry.
PEACE LILY
Peace Lilies are a top rated houseplant for beginners and adaptable to most environments. Thrives in indoor fluorescent lighting and can handle cooler temperatures than most houseplants. Droopy leaves is an indication that it needs to be watered. White "flowers" are prominent year round. A great beginner's plant.
Neathe bella palm can reach 3-5 ft tall over a long time but while small, they make great office plants for your desk, window sill, or small planters. Adaptable to most conditions as long as you don't overwater and clean leaves every so often.
An easy climber or vining plant that is adaptable to most conditions. Will do well in bright indirect light w/ moderate humidity but will find it's way around any environment.
SNAKE PLANTS
Sansevieria are not only drought tolerant but adaptable to almost any conditions. In lower light environments, they tend to have bigger leaves and may require some staking. Go with dark varieties as most variegated varieties will require some sun to keep strong coloration.
Drought tolerant ( water every 6 - 8 weeks) and adaptable to most environments. Will do well in bright indirect exposure but will grow slower in lower light and may require some staking. Plant will tend to have an arching growth form.
